Sunday's Waycross Shooting Involved Jacksonville Rapper
It's my first time reporting in Waycross, GA. Very unusual to gather news of such prominence or notoriety on Sunday.
Officials say they responded to the shooting at the Hampton Inn at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. What's so conspicuous about this incident is how galvanized multiple agencies including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as one local witness told me. The last straw that broke the camel's back -- given how excruciating it was for our assignment editor to sacrifice the station's only afternoon crew to make a far-distance trip to Georgia-- was when we learned that Jacksonville rapper Yungeen Ace- whose real name is Kenyatta Bullard was apart of the group that was ambushed.
He was the lone survivor of a quadruple shooting that happened last June on Town Center Parkway. Court appearances and the notoriety from the incident have arguably gained him more followers. Along with the underlying gang reference of "Yungeen Ace," this is the reason why we came to the agreement of using his government name more often in the reporter's package.
Indeed, there was a lot behind the scene, including a brain game with Bullard's attorney to confirm his presence, before the package became a top story. Not to mention, we're allowed very limited time in Waycross with the overwhelming number of homicides and shootings in Jacksonville, while there's no longer an active scene when we arrived, so I tried to execute judgments and community reporting most efficiently, plus the verification of social media posts and videos. Yes, law enforcement and Bullard's family were very unhelpful with the press. His mother even lied to us on the phone that her son had been with her at the time despite the scheduled show in Waycross.
